Noho Marae

Last week me my class my teachers and the parents went to the Noho Marae camp to go and learn about the Noho Marae

Hunting for greenstone/pounamu

Traveling to the beach with all the Pounamu Was so fun.Let’s talk about the Maori gods of the area. They are Poutini,Waitaiki,Tamaahua. I really liked it.Hunting for pounamu was like looking for something you can find but you’re standing on top of its kind of a thing. For an example someone found this is what a piece of pounamu looks like. This is one of the different types of pounamu this is a darker piece of pounamu there’s other piece’s of pounamu there’s lighter some are neally some that are completely see thru.If you every want to go to a marae you are very lucky if you go searching for pounamu you will be very lucky if you find a piece just to say you probably find a lot of serpentine and I mean a lot.

Flax weaving

Flax weaving was so cool  because I had only done it once before in Blenheim. I created something in the Blenheim Marae I know I did but can’t remember.I really liked the flax weaving in the marae in hokitika with miss kemp.In flax weaving I made a flower looking rose I was going to give it to someone but I didn’t give it away to anyone. Weaving is like making something but from a material people don’t really use a lot for making things you know what I mean.

The bush walk

Early Thursday morning we got up and got into our clothes. Then we had breakfast and headed off to bush walk first we had to drop off loch at medium spot. There is different spot’s where you get dropped off there is the long spot, the medium spot and the short spot where I was at.The walk I think was 4km or 6km I know is one of them but I pretty sure it is 4km when we got to the picnic point we continued walking to the next people and shortly after we found some of them. They were told that they could go ahead and find us so they found us and then we turned around and went back to the picnic point where we had some oranges while we were told to wait  for the other because Miss Kemp wanted to tell us a story about lake Mahinapua.Lake Mahinapua is the site of a great battle between The maori God Ngāti Wairangi he did a waita  that made a storm the sky went black and then with a storm above  and the waves got heavy and the boat flipped and the chiefs went overboard and the chiefs drowned so Ngāti Wairangi chopped the heads off the chiefs and swam back the hard way he had to swim across the lake with heads on his back had to walk to christchurch over 300 km to christchurch. So  now the lake is called Tāwiri a Te Makō (heap of sharks).

Soap carving

Soap carving is very unique. I really liked it because it’s something you don’t use a lot for carving so it’s very different and I liked it.We did it with Miss Sparrow so that made it better. I made it like a spiral thing and I really liked it.The things that we used was a clip and a pencil they wore actually very good for carving soap. If I ever do again I will definitely do it again with a pencil and clip.I really liked doing soap carving so I would diffinly do it if I could so I don’t get addicted to that stuff.

Over all I have learnt a lot from doing the marae experience it was so fun I learnt how to flax weave, soap carve,we went looking for pounamu/green stone and a lot more so over all it was great experience I had so if you get to go over night I diffinly would if I was.I would diffinly do it again if I could on that note tena koutou, tena koutou, tena koutou\ kartou.

Noho Marae

The Marae was a great expireice I was happy I payed the rest of the money for the night.Let’s talk about ponamu hunting on the river but the rock we found the most was syrpentime , here’s a picture.

Let’s talk about soap carving with miss barrow I liked the soap caring it was cool and different and I liked it, sorry I didn’t find a picture.

Let’s talk about flax weving with miss kemp I really liked it because I liked trying to make it in to the weird shapes that you can do with it,here’s a picture.
