Isaac Newton

Isaac Newton

Investigation number 2

Research and report on a famous Mathematician and his or her contribution to mathematics.

Isaac Newton was the creator of the three laws of motion, those laws were

law of motion( Law of inertia)

Second law (Law of Force, Mass, and Acceleration)

Third law of motion (Law of Action and Reaction)

First Law Of Motion ( Law of inertia)

The first law of motion is about if something is in the concept of motion it won’t stop unless something stops it. For example the earth is constantly in motion on its side. The meaning of inertia is something that is in motion or state of rest and will only stop or start with the force of something starting or stopping.

Second Law Of Motion (Law of Force, Mass and Acceleration)

Force is one of the second laws of motion, The law of force is the total force which is acting on an object at once. Mass is another one of the three laws of motion in the second law, Mass is the amount of matter within an object. Matter is a substance or substances that a physical object is made of.  The final and third law of the second law of motion is acceleration. Acceleration is when an object’s velocity changes. Velocity is an object’s speed or how fast something is moving.

Third Law Of Motion ( Law Of Action and Reaction)

The third law of motion is Action and Reaction, They work together in a way. They work together by the action then you’ll have a reaction to that action. A good example is lets say you were walking then you tripped you tripping was the action, then your body would have a reaction by covering your body with your arms or catching yourself with your arms that would be your reaction.

Isaac Newton has been a huge part of how math has evolved by introducing these three laws of motion. Even if he did find them out by an apple dropping on his head, that showed how creative he was with a drop of an apple.

William Pike

William Pike Challenge

Years 6-9, adventures and challenges await.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have a setback in your life, big enough for you to have to rebuild your life, from the beginning? William Pike had to start back to the basics, walking. During one of William’s adventures he and his friend were sleeping in a hut on a mountain, when suddenly the door flung open, water and mud came piling in as William was sitting down. William Pike awoke in a hospital bed with only one leg.

The William Pike Challenge is a program focusing on getting people outside of their comfort zone and exploring the world. There are three different challenges on the William Pike programme such as community service, passion project and outdoor activities.

Community service is crucial for completion and has many benefits including that it strengthens your community, it helps you develop new skills, gives you an excuse to meet people, mental health improvements, and creates a sense of purpose to meet new people. Community service is about giving back and helping out the community. To do this you could help at the SPCA or give money to a charity… The possibilities are endless.

Passion project is one of the three William Pike challenges. For passion project you have to do something new and that you feel passionate about, for me it was cooking & baking. To finish a passion project you have to do at least 20 hours of what you choose. You can also do multiple things but it’s more efficient to do one thing so you can get excellent at that one skill.

Passion project is exhilarating and amazing in so many ways that it should be a no brainer to do the William Pike Challenge. With the passion project zone you can learn new skills that you normally wouldn’t have enough time for in your day to day life. While doing the skill you chose you could also learn about yourself a lot on what you like and don’t like.

The last section of all three is the Outdoor Activities! These outdoor activities help to develop leadership skills and leave your comfort zone. These also help with your wellbeing and sociability. To achieve your William Pike Challenge you need to do five outdoor activities with your classmates.

There are many different types of challenges you will experience throughout William Pike. They are all great challenges and experiences that you should without a doubt try and experience.  I have experienced some of them and they were fabulous.

The most inspirational activity  I have done this year was by far the outdoor bike ride. It was much more challenging than anything I’ve ever done. I did it last year and didn’t even get half way through the first track. This year though I was determined to destroy the tracks. The tracks we did were the Mananui track and Hurunui tracks.

My most inspirational experience in the William Pike challenge was rock climbing because I was exhilarated while watching my team succeed. I had done it before but still found that I was learning new techniques.

You should definitely do William Pike, you will not regret your decision.

William Pike is a cool dude. Try the William Pike Challenge!

Ruru/Morepork Poem

Ruru

Maruāpō(night) bird of stealth

Feathers softer than pillows

While others sleep

Eyes won’t blink

Nocturnal and mighty

Camera of the night

360° neck

Turns full circle

Morepork, colossal, powerful

Doesn’t want to sleep

Or be preyed upon

Preponderant appetite

Mice, Rats and grasshoppers

More delicious than

hamburgers and chips combined

Eyes of a demon

Stare colder than ice,

 Warning…

Don’t walk past me at night.

Te Marama shines on me

Maruāpō needs me

Without me the night would be

too quiet and alone

With me you explore the night

I am cold

I am twisted

I am the bird of the night

My nickname is “Midnight”

I fly through night skies

Sharp and dangerous

Just like a knife

My glare is scarce and mighty

Once you look into my eyes

You’ll be scared, frightened

Even Maruāpō is scared to have

A staring contest with me

That’s how fierce my stares are

Ruru, ready to shine

I’ve spent my time

Lurking in the shadow.
